Paying for Home Care Services with Private Funds

For people who do not have Long Term Care Insurance or qualify for veterans benefits or other available community resources to pay for personal care/private duty care, private pay may be the only option available.

Following are the private pay sources available:

  • Life Insurance Policy.  Some Life Insurance Policies will allow you to use up to 50% of the policy’s value to pay for personal care/private duty services.
  • Reverse mortgage.reverse mortgage is a loan for senior homeowners that allows borrowers to access a portion of the home’s equity and uses the home as collateral.  The loan generally does not have to be repaid until the last surviving homeowner permanently moves out of the property or passes away.
  • Social Service Benefits. The Michigan Choice waiver program provides Medicaid-covered long term care services and supports in a home or residential setting for individuals who meet the medical/functional criteria for nursing facility level of care. Services are provided through MI Choice waiver agencies.
  • 401K.  There are some ways in which individuals can access their retirement funds early that can free up cash flow to pay for personal care/private duty services.
  • Accumulated Saving. Families how exhaust other payment options will turn to saving to pay for care for a loved on.
