Types of In-Home Care Services – Personal Care/Private Duty vs. Home Health

There are two categories of home care.  It is important to understand the difference.

Home Health Care (Skilled Care)

Skilled home health care is a service to help people restore and rehabilitate. This type of home care is typically paid for by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurances and provides skilled care services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and checking blood pressure, temperature or respiration rates.  A physician most provide an order for these services.

Home Care (Personal Care/Private Duty)

Personal Care/Private Duty Home care services generally offers care services that help seniors with their activities of daily living (ADL) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, light housekeeping, running errands and transportation, and can also include complex personal care. These services are intended to help people maintain a safe and independent quality of life in their home or wherever home maybe.  These services are commonly called personal care, non-medical home care and companion care.
